After the success of Breatktrought Starshot, the first of its name, a second part has just been written. For our readers who were not born in 2083 or who were too young to have heard of it, let’s rewind the story a bit.
Breathtrought Starshot was the first space exploration project of a system other than ours to see the light of day. Many others were thinking but few got to the point. Started in 2016, this project aimed to send probes to Proxima B located at the time 4.24 light years away. By the time the project matures and finds all the required funding, the probes were launched in 2029. Powered by a field of ultra-powerful laser emitters, they set off on their long journey of 54 years.
Few of the people who launched the project could see the culmination of this enormous duration in time. But the primary goal was to help future generations.
Many data were collected on the system, Proxima B seen definitively elected “best” candidate extra solar. Indeed not turning on itself the planet was cooked on itself on one side, leaving only a small percentage or establishing a base on the spot.
We are therefore awaiting more news on this new project, which this time will target the Barnard system. Powered by a much more powerful laser, scientists think they can make the journey of 6 light years faster. This time not in 54 years but in only 26 years!
Exoplanets detected in orbit of Barnard’s star are not considered habitable, this mission is just to reference as much information as possible about our neighboring systems. Launch in the course of this century!
